Tampa Eyelid Surgery or Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that improves the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids. The eyes are often the first location on the face to exhibit signs of the aging process. Because of genetics, sun damage and years of stress, the eyelids may develop significant wrinkles, prominent bags, and hooding because of excess skin. These unwanted changes create an aged and weathered appearance on the face.

Blepharoplasty surgery serves to address these undesirable changes and may involve the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both. Eyelid surgery may often times be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as a brow lift or facelift. At New Tampa Plastic Surgery, a discussion with Dr. Fakhre will help determine which type of eyelid surgery is best suited for you.

Reasons for Considering a Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery in Tampa:

  • Excess and redundant skin producing hooding of the upper eyelids
  • Prominent fatty deposits and 'bags' involving the lower eyelids
  • Noticeable wrinkles and laxity of the eyelid skin

The Blepharoplasty Procedure

Eyelid surgery may be performed in Dr. Fakhre's office or at a surgery center. Blepharoplasty may take anywhere from one to two and a half hours depending on whether both upper and lower eyelids are treated. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis with patients going home later that day.

Tiny incisions are used to excise the excess skin and fat present, as well as to tighten or correct laxity present in the eyelids. Incisions are carefully placed so as to minimize their visibility. Occasionally a canthopexy or special suspension technique may be used to reposition the lower eyelids to a more desireable position and minimize the risk of lid malposition.

Dr. Fakhre typically uses a combination of permanent and absorbable sutures. Permanent sutures will be removed at about five days after surgery.

Recovery following Eyelid Surgery

Patients should plan for a restful week after eyelid surgery. Because the eyelid skin is so thin and sensitive, significant bruising and swelling usually occurs after blepharoplasty. By keeping your head elevated above the level of your heart, as well as with the use of ice packs, postoperative swelling may be reduced. In most cases bruising will resolve in one to two weeks.

Pain following blepharoplasty is generally very well managed with oral pain medications. While complications are rare, they may occur. You will be given Dr. Fakhre's comprehensive instructions for your eyelid surgery. By carefully reading and following these instructions, you will help reduce the risk of complications.
