Tampa Liposuction
Liposuction or suction lipectomy is a cosmetic surgical procedure that serves to remove stubborn fat deposits in various areas of the body. Liposuction is not a weight loss tool, and patients who are overweight are better suited with a diet and exercise regimen. Instead the best candidates for liposuction are those who are in generally good shape, but have trouble spots that are unresponsive to diet and exercise.
Checking your BMI or Body Mass Index prior to consultation is important to help determine your candidacy for liposuction. We have included a link to the National Institutes of Health BMI Calculator so patients may calculate their exact BMI.
If your BMI is between 18 and 25, this is the ideal weight range and you will benefit most from liposuction. If your BMI is between 25 and 30, this is in the overweight range and what Dr. Fakhre considers to be the gray area. Some of these patients will benefit from liposuction while others will need to lose more weight. This is determined on a case by case basis following Dr. Fakhre's examination. Finally in patients whose BMI is over 30, this is considered the obese range and these patients should lose weight prior to surgery. This is helpful to not only minimize the risk of complications but also to allow for the best result possible.
In appropriate candidates, traditional tumescent liposuction is associated with one of the highest patient satisfaction rates in all of plastic surgery. The procedure directly targets and removes longstanding and troublesome fat deposits, producing powerful results. In recent years, the cosmetic industry has released numerous different devices with catchy names that are marketed to compete with the gold standard of tumescent liposuction. To date there is no high quality data published to show that any other type of liposuction is superior to traditional tumescent liposuction.
Liposuction of several different areas of concern is often performed in a single procedure. At New Tampa Plastic Surgery, during your consultation with Dr. Fakhre, he will help determine whether tumescent liposuction is right for you.
Reasons for Considering Liposuction in Tampa:
The Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction may be performed under sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure may last anywhere from one to three or more hours depending on the number of areas that need to be treated.
To perform the procedure tiny incisions are made, and hidden when possible, in the areas of concern. Following this a cannula is used to infuse a special tumescent solution that separates the fat cells, allowing them to be effectively suctioned. This solution helps with pain control as well as bruising. Following this Dr. Fakhre will select a special liposuction cannula best suited for the area to be treated. This cannula is then used to suction the unwanted fatty deposits, producing significant improvements in the shape and contour of these areas.
Care is taken during the liposuction procedure to ensure that contour irregularities are not created during the procedure by 'over suctioning' an area. Incisions are closed with absorbable sutures.
Recovery following Liposuction
Recovery following liposuction varies on the patient and the amount of liposuction performed. Bruising and swelling are common following liposuction. Dr. Fakhre will place you in a specialized compression garment following surgery and this should be worn for about a month to help achieve the best results.
Pain following liposuction is generally well tolerated and Dr. Fakhre will prescribe oral pain medications to take after surgery. While complications are rare after liposuction, they may occur. You will be given a thorough perioperative instruction sheet and by carefully reading and following Dr. Fakhre's instructions, you will help minimize the risk of problems.
