Tampa Weight Loss Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery procedures following weight loss or bariatric surgery have gained a marked increase in popularity. More and more patients have changed their lives for the better with dramatic weight loss by diet, exercise and/or bariatric surgery. Unfortunately excess skin and laxity may persist following the weight loss. This occurs because of the skins inability to contract following weight loss. The extent of the skin laxity that exists depends on the amount of weight lost, the rapidity of the weight loss, the patient's age and genetics.
Excess skin and laxity can be problematic in all areas of the body. The face, neck, breasts, abdomen, back, arms and thighs may all be areas of dissatisfaction. At New Tampa Plastic Surgery we offer a comprehensive approach to the weight loss patient. During your initial assessment and consultation, Dr. Fakhre will help determine not only which procedures are best suited for you, but also the ideal sequence of the procedures.
Reasons for Considering Plastic Surgery following Weight Loss in Tampa:
- Troublesome excess and loose skin in the following areas:
- Face and Neck
- Back
- Upper Arms
- Abdomen and Waistline
- Hips and Buttocks
- Thighs
- Desire to create a more proportioned figure
Plastic Surgery following Weight Loss
There is a wide variety of available plastic surgery procedures for weight loss patients. Often times patients will need more than one procedure to achieve optimum results. The specific types of procedures selected will be determined during your consultation with Dr. Fakhre. Typically these procedures are performed under general anesthesia and may last anywhere from three to five hours depending on the complexity of the procedures selected.
Regardless of the area of the body addressed, each unique procedure maintains similar goals of removing excess skin, placing incisions in well concealed locations when possible and improving the overall contour and proportions of the body. Patients can usually be discharged home later the same day following the procedure. Drains are usually placed following surgery and are typically removed about one week after surgery.
Recovery following Post Weight Loss Plastic Surgery
The recovery after plastic surgery in weight loss patients depends on the type of procedure being performed. In general these procedures are more involved given the fact that often times large amounts of excess skin need to be removed. As such, the recovery following these procedures is more prolonged and may vary from one to two weeks. Time off of work should be planned for as well as possibly having a friend or loved one available to help.
Drains are often times placed at the time of surgery and these are usually removed between five to seven days after surgery. Compression binders or garments will be placed by Dr. Fakhre at the conclusion of surgery and these will need to be worn for up to four weeks after surgery, again depending on the type of procedure performed.
Pain is common after these procedures, but is generally very well controlled with the pain medications that Dr.Fakhre will prescribe for you. Complications after surgery are unusual but may occur. You will be given Dr. Fakhre's comprehensive instruction sheet for your surgery. By carefully following these instructions, you will help reduce the chances of complications.
